Let’s Work Together

STEM Buddy (Middle School Volunteer Role)

What Is a STEM Buddy?

A STEM Buddy is a middle school volunteer who helps younger kids during summer STEM camp.

  • You are not a teacher.

  • You are not in charge by yourself.

  • Your job is to help kids feel calm, confident, and ready to try.

  • Kids who like helping younger kids

  • Kids who can follow directions

  • Kids who are okay asking for help when they need it

  • You do not need to be “good at science, math or engineering.”

What You’ll Do

  • Help Younger Campers

  • Work with 2–3 younger kids during activities

  • Encourage them to try things on their own

  • Help them stay calm when things get messy or don’t work

  • Help With Hands-On Stuff (Only When Needed)

  • Hold a bowl or cup steady

  • Let the camper decide when to pour or mix

  • Be Kind and Encouraging

  • Walk campers to snack or bathroom breaks

  • Help clean up tables and wash hands

  • Make sure kids stay with the group

  • If you’re unsure what to do, asking for help is the right choice.

Before camp starts, you will:

  • Attend a resume writing workshop (optional)

  • Come to training (required)

  • Come to training on Saturdays

Is This a Paid Job?

  • Leadership experience

  • Practice working with younger kids
